A former prominent jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained pending trial on three charges related to armed robbery. The 31-year-old rider, who is currently serving a 12-month disqualification from racing due to a previous offense, was denied bail during his court appearance in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia.
Tarrant is facing allegations of three counts of armed robbery, unlawfully entering premises with intent to commit a serious offense, and possession of dangerous substances. The offense of robbery carries severe penalties, with a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, which can escalate to life imprisonment in cases involving armed robbery, violence, or collaboration with others.
Scheduled to reappear in court on March 19, Tarrant, who has achieved 502 victories in his career, notably winning three Group races. His most significant triumph occurred in 2015 when he emerged victorious in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
In recent years, Tarrant has faced disciplinary actions, including a six-month ban in 2020 for physically confronting another jockey and a one-year disqualification in October for failing to cooperate with a stewards’ investigation regarding the authenticity of health assessment documents.
The case was referred to the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission, where Tarrant was instructed to enter a plea but remained unresponsive, leading to the imposition of a 12-month disqualification starting from October 8, 2025.
The Commission panel emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity within the sport and the obligation of licensed individuals to assist in inquiries transparently. Stewards concluded that Tarrant’s behavior undermined participant welfare and public trust in the industry, warranting the imposed penalty.
