Renowned British TV personality Monty Don, a long-time host of Gardeners’ World, has been a cherished figure on our screens for many years, offering invaluable gardening advice to enthusiasts throughout the changing seasons. Despite his public persona, Monty has openly shared his personal struggles with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a condition that impacts emotional well-being based on seasonal changes. This led him to make a decision to relocate from the UK, citing the reasons for this move.
In a conversation on Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast, Monty revealed the severity of his struggle with SAD, a condition that affects one in 20 people in the UK, prompting his wife Sarah to intervene. Married since 1983, Monty and Sarah have three children together: Adam, Tom, and Freya. Sarah’s concern for Monty’s well-being led him to seek professional help after she expressed her inability to cope with his mood swings and depression any longer.
Following Sarah’s ultimatum, Monty sought medical advice and was prescribed antidepressants, although he later opted for a light therapy device as a treatment alternative. Sharing his mental health journey on the Gardeners’ World podcast, Monty detailed his coping mechanisms, including dedicating one day a week to solitary gardening as a personal indulgence.
Despite his public image, Monty has been candid about his mental health struggles in the past. Reflecting on his battle with SAD, he mentioned finding solace in gardening activities, particularly during the winter months. Monty’s insights into his personal struggles and coping strategies add a human touch to his public persona.
Monty will be returning to BBC Two with Monty Don’s Rhineland Gardens, airing on Friday at 8pm. For those in need of emotional support, the Samaritans helpline is available 24/7 at 116 123, or you can reach out via email, in person at a branch, or through their website.
