“France, UK Intercept Suspected Russian Oil Tanker ‘Grinch'”

France’s navy, with assistance from British intelligence, has successfully intercepted an oil tanker believed to be operating under a false flag and sailing from Russia. The vessel, named the Grinch, was detained in the Mediterranean following suspicions of violating international sanctions.

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the operation, stating that the French Navy boarded the tanker in strict adherence to international maritime laws. The vessel’s diversion and the initiation of a judicial investigation aim to enforce sanctions and prevent the funding of aggressive actions against Ukraine.

The ship, flying a false flag from the Comoros islands, was crewed by Indian nationals and apprehended in the western Mediterranean near Almeria, Spain. This interception is part of a broader effort by France and other nations to combat the illicit activities of oil tankers evading sanctions, known as the “shadow fleet.”

British armed forces have expressed readiness to support allies in intercepting vessels associated with the Russian “shadow fleet.” Recent collaborations, including the assistance in seizing the Marinera tanker, underscore the ongoing efforts to curb illicit maritime operations and tighten controls on Russian oil shipments.

Efforts are underway to enhance coordination with flag-carrying countries to facilitate the boarding of suspicious vessels, as the global community seeks to address the environmental and security risks posed by these clandestine maritime activities.
