eBay Acquires Depop from Etsy for $1.2 Billion

eBay has announced its acquisition of the popular second-hand clothing platform Depop from Etsy for a significant sum of $1.2 billion (£890 million). This strategic move aims to attract a younger audience to eBay and is anticipated to be finalized in the second quarter of the current year.

Established in London in 2011, Depop is set to maintain its identity, branding, and platform following this acquisition. The surge in demand from Generation Z and Millennial consumers for sustainable and pre-owned products has propelled Depop’s success in recent years.

With seven million active buyers, predominantly under the age of 34, by the end of the previous year, Depop has experienced a nearly 60% increase in sales in the US over the past year. This aligns with eBay’s vision to tap into the expanding recommerce sector and cater to a younger demographic.

eBay’s CEO, Jamie Ianonne, expressed confidence in the acquisition, highlighting Depop’s strong presence in the pre-loved fashion market. The integration of Depop into eBay’s ecosystem is expected to enhance long-term growth opportunities by leveraging eBay’s scale, offerings, and operational capabilities.

Kruti Patel Goyal, Etsy’s CEO, conveyed enthusiasm for the transaction, emphasizing Etsy’s commitment to enhancing its core marketplace offerings. The deal is viewed as a positive development for both companies, enabling Etsy to focus on its marketplace growth while positioning Depop for further expansion under eBay’s umbrella.

Peter Semple, Depop’s CEO, shared his excitement about the collaboration with eBay, citing their shared values and commitment to sustainability. The acquisition signifies a new phase of growth for Depop, leveraging eBay’s expertise in the consumer-to-consumer fashion sector to accelerate expansion in the US and beyond.

The deal underscores the significant progress made by Depop in evolving its product experience and solidifying its brand presence in the global market.
