“Deadly Israeli Attacks Spark Fear of Deliberate Wildfires in Lebanon”

LISTEN | FRONT BURNER:

Over the recent weekend, a series of Israeli attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals in the southern region of Lebanon, as stated by the nation’s health ministry. This incident marked the deadliest assault since a fragile ceasefire agreement was reached in June, aiming to cease the hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, although confrontations persisted.

Apart from the aerial bombings and drone strikes, inhabitants and rescue teams in the area have accused Israeli military units of deliberately initiating wildfires that have been devastating residences, woodlands, and olive orchards in the embattled zone.

These occurrences have instilled fear among the local population regarding their ability to remain in the area and the uncertain prospects of the hundreds of thousands displaced by the conflict in ever being able to return to their homes.

Will Christou, a correspondent for The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been extensively covering the wildfires and the broader Israeli operations in southern Lebanon.

Correction: An earlier version of this episode had mistakenly mentioned the signing of a memorandum of understanding in June 2026 involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. In actuality, Israel was not part of that agreement. This error has been rectified in the episode.
