Barry Hearn criticized the lack of tact in Conor Benn’s departure from Matchroom Boxing to Zuffa, bypassing any communication with Eddie Hearn. Benn, 29, officially announced the split and has now aligned with the Saudi-supported promoter overseen by UFC president Dana White.
Having been under the guidance of his former promoters for a decade, including during a previous doping incident, Benn made the decision to part ways. Despite Eddie Hearn’s efforts to engage in discussions, Benn expressed no interest in communication, much to Hearn’s dismay.
Expressing disappointment in Benn’s actions, Barry Hearn emphasized the significance of loyalty and teamwork, which he believed Benn disregarded in favor of a lucrative offer from Dana White. Benn’s move to Zuffa makes him the second prominent athlete to join, following Jai Opetaia.
Eddie Hearn’s attempts to arrange a meeting were rebuffed by Benn, who preferred legal channels after the long-standing relationship. Benn justified his decision as a necessary step due to the financial benefits presented.
Hearn Sr. indicated that a different approach to the situation could have been more acceptable, highlighting the importance of mutual respect and standards. Despite the turn of events, Hearn Sr. expressed no qualms if Benn had handled the situation differently.
