“Author Rachel Reid Saves 5 Library Branches With $300K Donation”

Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has made a generous donation of $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library, stepping in to prevent the closure of five branches. Reid expressed her motivation to support the community, emphasizing the importance of utilizing success for positive impact.

Facing financial strain, the library had used $80,000 from its reserves to temporarily keep the branches open until the end of September. However, additional funding was needed to secure their long-term operation. Reid’s donation ensures the continued functioning of the five branches until the 2026-2027 fiscal year.

Library CEO Julia Merritt expressed gratitude for Reid’s significant contribution, emphasizing its critical role in covering the staffing costs for the branches. The donation was hailed as one of the most substantial private gifts in the library’s history, underscoring Reid’s commitment to enhancing access to literature and community services.

Reid highlighted her personal connection to libraries, crediting her childhood visits to the Bedford library as a catalyst for her writing career. Stressing the essential role of libraries in fostering creativity and community engagement, she emphasized the need for sustainable public funding to support these vital services.

While acknowledging the temporary relief provided by private donations, library officials and the provincial government underscored the necessity of long-term financial stability for public libraries. Efforts are underway to collaborate on developing a sustainable funding model that aligns with the province’s financial realities.

Amid ongoing discussions about the future of library funding, Reid’s donation serves as a catalyst for raising awareness and advocating for continued support for public libraries. In recognition of her contribution, Reid will be part of a special event celebrating libraries and community engagement in the coming weeks.
