A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. According to the study, smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the big brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.
The research indicates that internet connection issues, such as frequent dropouts, slow download speeds, and service outages, are common complaints among consumers. A significant 91% of broadband users reported experiencing problems with their service in the past year, highlighting the prevalence of issues in the industry.
Among the leading providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers encountering this issue. Virgin Media also performed poorly, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying high bills. Additionally, dissatisfaction with slow download speeds was noted by around a quarter of Virgin Media customers.
Sky users expressed discontent with the performance, with nearly one in three stating that their broadband speed was inadequate. Other major providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received negative feedback from customers.
On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic were praised for their reliability and service quality. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, outperforming rivals such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
Which? emphasizes the trend of smaller broadband firms consistently outscoring major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money. The consumer advocate encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if dissatisfied with their current service, suggesting the use of Ofcom’s broadband checker for comparison.
In response to the report, a spokesperson from Virgin Media highlighted the company’s ongoing investments to enhance services, citing official data from Ofcom showing a decrease in complaints. They also referenced independent data ranking Virgin Media as a top performer across various broadband categories.
Which? Head of Home Products and Services, Natalie Hitchins, emphasized the importance of quality broadband as essential, urging customers to leverage competitive deals and switch providers for better service.
