Britons have received a warning about the potential arrival of a new cold snap dubbed the “Beast from the East,” expected to hit the UK towards the end of the month. Weather forecasts indicate a widespread snowstorm looming in the final days of January, with temperatures set to drop as low as -12C.
Recent weather maps reveal the formation of a significant cold spell starting around January 27, as Arctic air moves in from the east, bringing heavy snowfall across various parts of the country. The onset of snow is projected to occur early on January 27, with snow showers anticipated in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland from 6am onwards. Snowfall rates could reach up to 0.4 inches per hour in certain areas, with snow coverage extending from Colchester to below Inverness by evening.
Meteorologists predict a resurgence of snow on January 29, with snowfall expected to blanket the UK from end to end, covering a distance exceeding 600 miles and accumulating up to two inches in many regions. By the early hours of January 30, only select areas like London, parts of the east coast of England, and specific regions in Wales are likely to escape the snowfall.
Simultaneously, temperatures are set to plummet significantly, with overnight lows forecasted to range between -1C and -6C in England, approximately -5C in Wales, and as low as -12C in certain parts of Scotland, particularly around Inverness.
The latest long-range forecast from the Met Office for January 20 to 29 indicates a potential shift towards colder conditions with influences from the east. While initially, milder Atlantic air is expected to prevail, leading to cloudy and changeable weather with showers, later in the period, colder conditions are likely to take hold, increasing the possibility of snow across various parts of the country.
Grahame, a spokesperson for the Met Office, advised caution, emphasizing that the severe cold weather is not yet confirmed. While there is a slight chance of colder winds from the east towards the end of January, it is still subject to change. The possibility of milder southern air persisting, thereby keeping the cold at bay, is equally probable for the time being.
