Luke Littler has been acclaimed as the “ultimate darts maestro of all time” by Luke Humphries following the 19-year-old’s triumph in capturing the World Masters championship. Littler outplayed Humphries 6-5 in a captivating match to secure another accolade in his burgeoning trophy cabinet.
In the event held in Milton Keynes, Littler achieved a remarkable 104.72 average and landed 13 maximums on his way to clinching his 11th significant PDC title and the coveted £100,000 cash prize. He convincingly defeated Josh Rock in the quarterfinals before narrowly edging out Gerwyn Price 5-4 in the semifinal to advance to the ultimate showdown.
Already, the young sensation ranks as the joint third most victorious player in darts history, sharing the spot with James Wade and trailing only Michael van Gerwen (48 titles) and Phil Taylor (79 titles) in terms of championship triumphs.
With just the European Championship title remaining to complete his collection of all PDC ranked titles, Littler received early recognition from Humphries, who bestowed upon him a major championship title.
Reflecting on his performance, Littler acknowledged the pressure imposed by Humphries and lauded his opponent’s composure under stress, dubbing him as the premier darts player in history. Despite Humphries boasting a higher average at 105.51 and leading 5-4 initially, Littler rallied back to dominate the final two sets.
Expressing his thoughts on the intense competition, Littler remarked on the challenges faced but highlighted the importance of perseverance and ultimate victory. He emphasized the resilience required in every game and leg, signaling a promising continuation of their rivalry throughout the year.
In a thrilling final showdown, Littler narrowly secured victory, displaying exceptional skill with a 153 checkout and two impressive 121 finishes, much to the delight of the crowd at Arena MK.
Although Humphries expressed disappointment at falling short of victory, he acknowledged the positive aspects of his performance and indicated satisfaction with his current form, setting a positive tone for future tournaments.
Littler and Humphries currently dominate the darts scene, with Littler holding the upper hand after securing TV final triumphs over Humphries in the previous season at the World Grand Prix and Grand Slam of Darts.
