“Amazon Kindle Update Blocks Access to New Books”

Kindle users received a prior warning that their e-readers may lose access to new books, with the deadline now just 24 hours away as the block takes effect on May 20, 2026. This update impacts older models like the Kindle 5 and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen, preventing the addition or reading of new content.

For those concerned about the Amazon update affecting their devices, here is a list of models that will be restricted from the book store this week:

– Kindle 1st Generation (2007)
– Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010)
– Kindle Keyboard (2010)
– Kindle 4 (2011)
– Kindle Touch (2011)
– Kindle 5 (2012)
– Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012)

Owners of these devices will retain access to their existing book libraries, as the content already owned will remain accessible. However, after the deadline passes, the affected Kindles will essentially become “read-only” devices.

Amazon stated, “Starting May 20, 2026, customers using Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store.” These models have been supported for at least 14 to 18 years, but technological advancements necessitate ending support for these devices.

While this news may disappoint older Kindle owners, Amazon aims to ease the transition by offering 20% discounts on selected new Kindle models, accompanied by a £15 eBook credit. The range of new Kindles includes standard models and Colorsoft devices with color screens. Additionally, the Scribe range is available for those seeking more than just a reading device, featuring a digital pen for note-taking and document annotation.
