An acclaimed bed and breakfast (B&B) and cafe in Alburgh, Norfolk, has ceased operations, delivering a significant blow to the local community. The owner attributed the closure to the challenging location of The Dove Inn, which led to a lack of foot traffic passing by.
Sonya Resemblance, the proprietor, described the closure as devastating after two and a half years of serving a loyal customer base she fondly referred to as “beautiful people.” This closure is reflective of a broader trend affecting the hospitality industry in the UK, with numerous pubs and businesses facing closure due to escalating costs and evolving consumer habits.
One such establishment, the White Horse in Beaconsfield, recently shut down permanently, underscoring the challenges faced by pub owners who have been grappling with soaring operational expenses. The industry has witnessed a concerning trend, with 300 pubs closing in the initial quarter of 2025 alone, prompting fears of a decline in the sector.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafes in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before shutting down, The Dove Inn could not sustain its operations. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the business in July 2023, expressed pride in offering a completely gluten-free menu, catering to individuals who struggle with dining out due to dietary restrictions.
In a heartfelt message announcing the closure, Sonya thanked patrons for their support and acknowledged the business’s contributions to job creation, training opportunities, and mental well-being initiatives. She lamented the inability to make the venture successful at its current location, citing the site as a primary factor in the closure.
Prior to the shutdown, the business had acknowledged the industry challenges and expressed a commitment to weathering the storm. Despite efforts from loyal customers to keep the business afloat, Sonya confirmed the closure on January 16, receiving an outpouring of supportive messages from the community.
One customer expressed sadness over the closure, reminiscing about the pleasant gatherings and delightful food served at the establishment. The closure serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by small businesses in the hospitality sector, battling against economic pressures and changing market dynamics.
