Working individuals have long been overlooked by our economy.
The previous administration opted for disorder and uncertainty instead of prioritizing better living standards. They neglected investments in transportation systems such as trains, buses, and roads, as well as in clean energy and future job opportunities. This lack of commitment to crucial sectors like schools, hospitals, and communities stifled economic growth.
Residents in the North have experienced the severe repercussions of inadequate investment firsthand – a fact I am familiar with from my tenure as a Leeds Member of Parliament for 16 years.
In a significant move, I recently unveiled the largest funding injection into Northern rail services in a generation, collaborating closely with local leaders to plan and implement this initiative.
The introduction of Northern Powerhouse Rail will revolutionize travel across various cities, enhancing connectivity between Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York with faster and more frequent train services that extend to Newcastle, Hull, and beyond.
Currently, individuals in Liverpool, for example, have access to only two fast trains per hour to Manchester, with a lengthy journey time of up to an hour and 25 minutes to cover just 28 miles to Manchester Airport.
Residents of Leeds face challenges as the largest city in Western Europe without a comprehensive mass transit system, with only a third of the population able to reach the city center within 30 minutes.
These issues are not mere inconveniences but significant barriers to job creation, business growth, and family well-being across the North. The new investment aims to address these challenges by providing faster commutes, improved connections, and more quality time with loved ones rather than waiting at train stations. This initiative builds upon previous efforts, such as freezing rail fares for the first time in three decades and maintaining the £3 bus fare cap, benefiting individuals in the region.
Enhancing connectivity between major cities like Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, and Liverpool will unleash their economic potential, from Manchester’s thriving tech sector to Leeds’ financial services hub, Sheffield’s advanced manufacturing industry, Liverpool’s life sciences sector, and Newcastle’s leadership in clean energy innovation.
By boosting productivity levels in the North to match the national average, an additional £40 billion could be added annually to the economy, providing more resources for essential services like education, healthcare, and public amenities.
While previous governments merely talked about “levelling up,” neglecting critical infrastructure and driving young talent away, the current administration is committed to fulfilling promises and revitalizing the North’s potential. By honoring commitments and focusing on infrastructure development, we aim to revive the legacy of the North’s historic railway achievements and propel the region into a new era of progress and prosperity.
