The UK government appears unsympathetic to the potential fall of the Iranian regime, as indicated by a Government minister. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has characterized Iran as a hostile state aligned with Russia. Recent protests in Iran have seen millions of citizens calling for regime change, resulting in at least 116 deaths.
Alexander emphasized the UK’s longstanding view of Iran as a security threat in the Middle East and beyond, citing the regime’s repression of its own people. She expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Iran and the need to address it promptly. Additionally, she highlighted Iran’s destabilizing activities, including collaboration with Vladimir Putin to circumvent sanctions.
When questioned about the UK’s reaction if the Iranian government were overthrown, Alexander suggested a similar response would be expected. The Labour frontbencher emphasized the UK’s desire for a peaceful transition of power in the event of a regime change, advocating for the restoration of democratic values and fundamental freedoms in Iran.
The presence of a limited number of British citizens in Iran was noted by Alexander. Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament speaker warned that the US and Israel would be considered “legitimate targets” if the US were to strike Iran, following threats from President Donald Trump.
Trump expressed support for the Iranian protesters and hinted at potential US involvement in promoting freedom in Iran. Reports indicated that military options for a strike on Iran had been presented to Trump, although no final decision had been made.
Alexander refrained from commenting on foreign policy or military plans of other countries but emphasized the UK’s monitoring of developments in Iran. She urged Iranian authorities to prioritize citizen safety, protect fundamental freedoms, and exercise restraint in responding to protests. The US State Department issued a warning not to underestimate President Trump’s intentions.
Ultimately, any decision regarding war would lie with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The US military reaffirmed its readiness to defend its interests and allies in the Middle East.
