Millions of consumers continue to rely on the major mobile networks, but a recent report by consumer group Which? indicates that EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling short in terms of overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. The survey, based on feedback from over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, revealed that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.
The study aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are not. The results highlighted that the established “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone – are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of service quality.
Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Among the major providers, EE performed the best, ranking ninth, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.
One of the key findings of the report was the significant price difference between the Big Four and smaller networks. Customers on the major networks paid an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, whereas users on smaller networks paid just £9 on average.
Despite the lower prices, the report emphasized that many smaller providers utilize the infrastructure of major networks, ensuring comparable signal strength and service quality without the premium cost associated with well-known brands.
Switching providers was highlighted as a straightforward process, with some customers able to complete the transition in as little as 10 minutes. An example cited in the report was a customer who switched from O2 to a more affordable SMARTY plan within minutes, saving approximately £200 annually.
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, stated that smaller providers consistently outperform the larger mobile firms by offering better customer service and more cost-effective deals. She encouraged customers approaching the end of their contracts to consider switching to a provider that offers better value.
