Rory McIlroy has endorsed a new trophy that will recognize the top DP World Tour player in the Majors each year. However, the rule states that the Masters champion, McIlroy in this case, is not eligible to win the trophy.
After becoming the first European to achieve the career Grand Slam by winning at Augusta in April, McIlroy’s outstanding performance prompted the creation of the Rory McIlroy Award. This accolade will be presented to the tour member who excels across all four Major Championships in a season.
Despite the honor, McIlroy humorously acknowledged his ineligibility for the award, stating, “It would be cool but I am ineligible for it. I thought it would be better if I wasn’t. I think it was a decision made by all of us. We thought it was best if I would be ineligible for it.”
The recognition for McIlroy extends further as he becomes the fifth player to have an award named after him on the DP World Tour, acknowledging both his on-course achievements and continuous support for the tour during challenging times.
Expressing his gratitude, McIlroy mentioned, “It’s a huge honor… It’s an amazing honor, and I’m looking forward to next year when the majors are over and being able to hand it to whoever the deserving winner is.”
McIlroy, aged 36, recently completed the career Grand Slam, joining an elite group of golfers. He reflected on the significance of having an award named after him, emphasizing the importance of leaving a legacy for future generations.
As he aims to defend his title at the DP World Tour Championships, McIlroy is on course to secure a fourth consecutive Race to Dubai win, aiming to surpass his shared record with Ballesteros. He praised the sustained excellence required to achieve such a feat over the years.
Reflecting on his recent performance, McIlroy expressed confidence in his game and hopes to continue his good form in the upcoming tournament.
