“Pop Singer Faces Financial Ruin After Hitler Salute Conviction”

A shamed pop singer shared in court her dire financial struggles following a conviction for performing a Heil Hitler salute during a concert. Melanie Mueller, a German artist, sought to clear her tarnished reputation by appealing the verdict.

Mueller disclosed to the judges her significant financial downfall, plunging into debt, relying on family aid, and facing the imminent sale of her residence. She adamantly denied the accusations of making Hitler salutes during her performances.

However, the Leipzig Regional Court in Germany upheld her conviction. The case revolved around a contentious concert in September 2022, where Mueller was found to have repeatedly executed the Nazi salute on stage.

According to prosecutors, the audience responded with disturbing chants of “Heil” after Mueller shouted “Zickezacke,” inciting call-and-response cries of “Heil, Heil, Heil” – a known Nazi expression.

Formerly a sought-after performer across Europe, Mueller stated that her bookings have now completely vanished.

The appeals court lessened the financial penalty but upheld the conviction. Judge Karen Aust imposed 70 daily fines of £43, totaling around £3,000, considering Mueller’s meager income.

Despite the defense’s plea for a full acquittal, the verdict remains subject to further legal proceedings. Mueller lamented the irreversible damage done, estimating a loss of approximately £345,000.

She acknowledged owing £129,000 to the tax authorities and around £35,000 to other creditors. Her residence in Leipzig is currently undergoing forced auction procedures.

Mueller’s legal woes escalated after a police search of her residence in August 2023 uncovered 0.69 grams of a cocaine mixture and an ecstasy tablet, leading to an additional drug possession charge.

She revealed that she receives no financial support from her ex-husband, with whom she co-parents two children aged six and eight.

Mueller consistently maintained that the Nazi gesture was a part of her performance routine and not an intentional act, a defense the court dismissed.

Presently, she earns approximately £1,300 per month working in event planning for a camping and catering firm, as her music career has significantly dwindled. Testimony indicated that streaming platforms generated only £43 for her throughout 2025.
