“Canadian Gas Prices Drop, Diesel Costs Surge”

Gas prices in Canada are decreasing, bringing relief to drivers as a result of the annual seasonal change. Recent data showed a rise in gas prices earlier this week, hitting a national average of 194.5 cents per litre before falling by about eight cents overnight to 186.9 cents per litre by Friday.

The shift in gas prices is a common occurrence, with costs typically climbing during the summer and dropping in the fall due to the transition from summer-blend gasoline to winter blend fuel in mid-September. This adjustment is aimed at preventing fuel-line freezing and optimizing engine performance in colder temperatures, as explained by Dan McTeague, the president of Canadians for Affordable Energy.

McTeague anticipates a further slight decrease in gas prices over the weekend, although he believes this may be the extent of the reduction unless there is a significant increase in oil, diesel, jet fuel, and gasoline supply in global markets.

While gas prices are on a downward trend, the situation with diesel prices is contrasting. The average cost of diesel in Canada stood at $2.751 per litre as of Thursday, with variations in different cities such as Calgary at $2.513 and Vancouver exceeding $3 per litre.

The surge in diesel prices is concerning for various industries relying on diesel-powered vehicles for transportation and operations. Tej Dulat, director of government and public affairs at the Canada Truck Operators Association, highlighted the potential impact on consumers, warning that the increased fuel costs may lead to higher prices for goods and services as companies pass on these expenses to customers.

The current market dynamics, including disruptions in oil supply due to conflicts in the Middle East, have led to fluctuations in fuel prices, with diesel costs soaring while gas prices are showing a decline in Canada.
