A massive sinkhole appeared in front of a coastal mansion in Malibu, reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage, causing the driveway to collapse. The incident led to a gas leak that was quickly addressed by authorities and utility SoCalGas, who temporarily shut off gas services in the area to prevent coastal erosion.
The sinkhole, measuring 7.5 to nine meters deep and 18 meters wide, extended into the roadway, prompting officials to declare a local emergency and order the evacuation of 31 nearby properties. Cage’s representatives did not provide immediate comments on the situation, but property records indicate that he acquired the mansion in 2024.
The mansion sustained damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area due to the remnants of Hurricane Marie, which transitioned back into a tropical storm. The City of Malibu emphasized that the incident was part of broader coastal conditions affecting the region, with ongoing monitoring of erosion in various vulnerable areas along the coastline.
Situated between the ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway, the private neighborhood where the mansion is located faced challenges from the sinkhole incident. Cage, aged 62, has been actively involved in entertainment projects, including his recent role in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and an upcoming portrayal of NFL figure John Madden in a biographical film set to be released later this year. With a prolific career spanning over 100 films, Cage earned an Oscar for his performance in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
