In the Canadian Elite Basketball League, the championship format has been adjusted to a single-game showdown. Following a decision by the league in collaboration with the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers, the best-of-three final was abruptly stopped due to unsafe playing conditions caused by court condensation.
The game interruption occurred with Brampton initially taking a 6-0 lead, countered by Winnipeg’s equalizing efforts. The Sea Bears’ Xavier Moon, a three-time CEBL MVP, slipped on the court during defense, leading to the game suspension. Consequently, a one-game championship has been scheduled in Winnipeg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, shifting from the originally planned multi-game series.
The CEBL stated that the single-game final was chosen as the most equitable approach to determining a champion given the inability to complete the best-of-three series within the allotted timeframe. This decision also aligns with the championship format used in previous years.
Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley expressed regret over the cancellation of the game. Brampton had previously secured victories against Winnipeg in their encounters earlier in the season.
In their playoff journey, the Sea Bears defied expectations by defeating the Saskatoon Mamba in the Western Conference semifinal and later stunning the favored Vancouver Bandits in the West final. On the East side, Brampton finished second with an 11-13 record, triumphing over the Ottawa BlackJacks and the Niagara River Lions to secure their spot in the final.
The upcoming championship game not only promises on-court excitement but also features a compelling off-court narrative, with both teams owned by siblings – David Asper overseeing the Sea Bears and Leonard Asper leading the Honey Badgers.
