The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has achieved global success once again. After 17 years, the band secured the Grade 1 global title at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. This victory marks their seventh championship win. Led by Pipe Major Alan Bevan, the band’s performance was described as top-class by Glasgow Life, the charity hosting the competition.
Bevan expressed that winning the championship is a significant milestone, emphasizing its importance in the world of pipe bands. Notably, this win is the first time since 2010 that a band from outside the U.K. has claimed the world championship, as highlighted by Glasgow Life.
Over 200 bands from around the world participated in the competition, including performers from 14 countries like Australia, New Zealand, Oman, and Malaysia. Andrew Lee, a bagpiper in the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, shared his joy at the long-awaited victory, attributing it to years of hard work and dedication within the band.
Preparations for the competition began in the fall, with a focus on being expressive and unique in their performance style. Bevan highlighted the band’s dynamic drum section, which generates energy and excitement during their performances. The band’s diverse membership, consisting of individuals from various professions and backgrounds, reflects a strong and vibrant piping community in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest.
