“U.S. and Canada Make Progress in Trade Talks”

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that both U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney will receive various “options” after trade discussions between Canadian and U.S. officials on Thursday. Greer highlighted that these negotiations are progressing well from the Trump administration’s viewpoint. Describing the talks as “good” and “cordial,” Greer mentioned plans for further discussions with the president and expressed that Canadian officials will engage with the prime minister.

Following the meeting, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc affirmed his commitment to fulfilling Canadian expectations. LeBlanc did not specify the number of upcoming meetings with Greer, emphasizing they will continue discussions as necessary. Additionally, LeBlanc is set to update the Advisory Committee on Canada-U.S. Economic Relations on the negotiation progress.

During the day, LeBlanc, along with chief trade negotiator Janice Charette, met with Greer for the second time this week and the fourth in three weeks. Talks have intensified since Trump’s threat to impose significant duties on numerous Canadian goods, in addition to existing tariffs, scheduled for implementation on August 19.

After the recent meeting, Charette resumed discussions with her U.S. counterpart late into the evening. Efforts are underway to develop a proposal for Trump before the tariff deadline, focusing on potentially lowering sectoral tariffs. The Americans are also pushing for preferential access to Canadian critical minerals, covering security and energy aspects.

Despite the ongoing negotiations, the Canadian side has emphasized the political challenges if the August 19 tariffs are imposed. To address trade concerns, Canada is willing to make concessions, including lifting booze bans, considering changes in the auto sector, and dairy adjustments. Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed openness to reintroducing U.S. alcohol if a fair deal is achieved, emphasizing the impact of tariffs on both countries.

Ford’s stance aligns with Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette’s office, stressing that the ban on U.S. alcohol will persist until a fair agreement is reached. The decision on alcohol sales remains within the jurisdiction of the Quebec government, signaling a united front in the trade negotiations.
