Stellantis Considers Closure and Sale of Brampton Plant

Stellantis is reportedly contemplating the closure and potential sale of the Brampton Assembly Plant, according to a national union. Unifor’s national president Lana Payne revealed that Stellantis shared this information with the union but has not officially notified them as required by the collective agreement. The company is obligated to give at least one year’s notice before closing or selling the plant, but discussions about a potential sale with another entity have been hinted at.

Expressing disappointment, Payne emphasized the significant impact on union members who have dedicated themselves to the plant. Stellantis stated that they are gearing up for collective bargaining and emphasized their commitment to finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for the Brampton Assembly facility.

The plant was initially set for retooling for Jeep Compass production, which commenced in January 2024 but was halted in February 2025. Subsequently, the company informed the union in October 2025 about the relocation of Jeep Compass production to the U.S., leading to a potential indefinite shutdown of the Brampton plant.

Unifor plans to address this matter during upcoming contract negotiations with Stellantis. Payne stressed the irreplaceable nature of well-paid union jobs established through decades of auto sector agreements. The union continues to advocate for government policies safeguarding Canada’s auto manufacturing industry, highlighting the plant’s historical significance in generating jobs and producing renowned Chrysler and Dodge vehicles.

As Unifor engages in labor negotiations with major automakers, including General Motors and Stellantis, Vito Beato, president of Unifor Local 1285, affirmed the union’s dedication to preserving Brampton plant jobs. Despite the current plant inactivity, workers are receiving income security equivalent to 70% of their earnings.

Support for the workers and plant’s future was reiterated by Brampton’s mayor spokesperson and a representative from Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada. Both entities expressed commitment to collaborating with Stellantis, Unifor, and the Ontario government to safeguard jobs, ensure production continuity, and secure long-term investments in Canada.
