“Reviving Tradition: Family Dinner on a Beige Mat”

Isma Ishtiaq, residing in Delta, British Columbia, shares a cherished childhood memory of family dinners on a small beige mat. The atmosphere was cozy, bathed in a warm sunset glow, as they enjoyed flavorful Pakistani dishes like biryani and butter chicken. Gathered in a circle, they bonded over stories and daily highlights, carrying on a tradition passed down from her father’s upbringing in Lahore to their suburban home in B.C.

The significance of these meals extended beyond mere sustenance, as Isma’s father emphasized the humility and gratitude fostered by eating together on the ground. This ritual symbolized family unity and cultural celebration spanning generations.

However, as time passed and responsibilities grew, family dinners became scarce. It wasn’t until a Thanksgiving dinner, years later, that Isma revisited this tradition. Inviting friends from diverse backgrounds to partake, they recreated the circle on the floor, relishing the simplicity and togetherness it brought.

The evening marked a harmonious blend of heritage traditions and Canadian customs, resonating deeply with all participants. Inspired by this experience, Isma’s father decided to revive the tradition, bringing the family closer amidst their busy lives.

Now, as they gather around the familiar beige mat, sharing meals and stories, the family finds solace in prioritizing this sacred time together. Whether on the floor or at a dining table, the essence of unity prevails, echoing the past and shaping the future for generations to come.
