TV Licence Fee to Increase to £180 in April; Refunds Available

The fee for a TV licence is increasing once again, but if you no longer require one, you may be eligible for a refund.

Currently priced at £174.50 per year, the TV licence fee will rise to £180 starting in April. A TV licence is necessary to watch or record live TV, as well as to view any content – live or catch-up – on BBC iPlayer.

If you solely watch catch-up shows on streaming platforms other than BBC iPlayer, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, you do not need a TV licence. However, if you access live shows through these services, a TV licence is required. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to £1,000.

In case you no longer require your TV licence before it expires, you may be entitled to a refund if there is at least one month remaining on it. Additionally, if you qualify for an over-75 or blind concession, you may also be eligible for a refund.
