Armed officers escorted an angered family off an airplane following an incident where they were allegedly asked to relinquish a business class seat for an airline staff member.
Ivan Lopes, along with his wife and two daughters, aged 25 and 11, were on a journey back to their home in Brazil after traveling across Europe. The situation unfolded on an Air France flight, AF562, scheduled to depart from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Salvador, Bahia state in Brazil.
The family encountered issues at the boarding gate in Paris after upgrading their tickets to business class from premium economy for €399 per passenger. Mr. Lopes claimed that despite paying for an upgrade for one of his daughters to seat 7L, they were informed of a technical problem with the seat and the upgrade could not be accommodated.
However, upon boarding, they discovered that seat 7L was occupied by a French passenger associated with Air France, while the actual problematic seat was 5L. The family disputed the explanation, leading to a confrontation in front of other passengers, causing what they described as a “humiliating” and “intimidating” situation.
Allegedly, the captain became aggressive during the explanation, with tension escalating to the extent that armed French police were called to remove the family from the aircraft. They were then informed they would need to buy new tickets to travel the following day.
Following legal advice, the family purchased new business class tickets with another airline. Mr. Lopes mentioned that their luggage was delayed for approximately two hours post-incident.
The family estimated a financial loss of around €16,000, including the original Air France tickets, upgrade costs, replacement flights, and additional expenses. They intend to take legal action against the airline, claiming the response was disproportionate and caused undue distress, particularly to the 11-year-old.
Air France acknowledged the family’s removal from the flight but disputed their version of events. The airline stated that the family’s behavior was disruptive and caused delays, prompting complaints from other passengers and potentially compromising safety.
According to Air France, a business class seat was unavailable, and their policy allows for the cancellation of day-of-travel upgrades with a refund in such situations. The airline offered to seat the family together in premium economy, as per their original tickets, but the family insisted on keeping three business class seats and moving one passenger back to economy.
The captain decided to offload the group following international regulations to ensure the flight’s safe operation. Air France emphasized that passenger and crew safety is their utmost priority.
