“Emma Raducanu Takes Time in Coach Search”

Emma Raducanu has expressed that she is not in a hurry to secure a new permanent coach following her recent split with Francisco Roig after the Australian Open. Roig, who was Raducanu’s ninth coach and seventh full-time coach to part ways with her, previously collaborated with Rafael Nadal for 18 years before differing opinions on playing style led to their separation.

Since January, Raducanu has been collaborating with her hitting partner Alexis Canter and is content with the current coaching arrangement as she prepares for Indian Wells in California, where she is set to compete against Anastasia Zakharova in the opening round.

While the 23-year-old continues to work closely with Mark Petchey on a day-to-day basis, Petchey’s commitments as a Tennis Channel broadcaster prevent him from being available full-time. Raducanu shared her perspective in California, stating, “Right now, it’s more about bringing my instincts back out, getting back in touch with myself. I have had a lot of people telling me what to do, how to play, and it hasn’t necessarily fit.”

She further added, “So I want to come back to my natural way of playing. That takes time to relearn because that’s something that has been coached out of me a little bit. I don’t necessarily want to have one coach in the role because anyone I bring in is straight away going to be scrutinized, even if it’s a trial.”

Raducanu expressed openness to the idea of finding a compatible coach but emphasized the importance of aligning philosophies. She highlighted her positive experience with Alexis so far but indicated a willingness to explore other coaching options.

Reflecting on her time with Petchey, Raducanu praised his impact, particularly during Wimbledon last summer, where she credited him for assisting her both on and off the court. Describing a memorable moment during a hike in L.A., Raducanu highlighted the deep conversations that helped her self-reflect and improve.
