“UK Considers Australia-Style Social Media Ban for Under-16s”

Keir Starmer has suggested that implementing an Australia-style social media ban for individuals under 16 is being considered. The Prime Minister has raised concerns about the excessive screen time of children and has promised to take further measures to safeguard them. This initiative followed comments made by Wes Streeting endorsing a ban, highlighting the potential negative impacts of social media on young individuals.

During a visit to Scotland, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of enhancing protections for children from the influence of social media platforms. He mentioned that they are monitoring the situation in Australia but are open to exploring various options to enhance safeguards for minors on social media and address concerns related to screen time among children under five.

The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers recently supported a ban, citing evidence that unrestricted access to social media is contributing to behavioral issues in schools, affecting the mental well-being of young people, and exposing them to inappropriate content.

Health Secretary, speaking earlier, expressed his support for actions in this area while acknowledging the need to consider diverse perspectives on the matter. The government is actively considering restrictions, with a decision expected in the near future rather than delaying it. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall is reportedly looking into potential restrictions, with a focus on addressing the consequences of unregulated technology.

Praising Keir Starmer for engaging with MPs on this issue, Wes Streeting expressed concerns about the detrimental effects of social media on the overall well-being, education, and life opportunities of young individuals. He highlighted various issues such as the impact on cognition, cyberbullying, body image concerns, grooming, and unrealistic expectations perpetuated through social media apps.
