“The Family Chat”: Giovanna and Tom Fletcher Encourage Safe Smartphone Use

With their 11-year-old son getting ready to start secondary school in September, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher made the decision to provide him with a phone. The couple believed that having a conversation with each other and their son was essential before taking this step.

Giovanna, aged 40, expressed concerns about children accessing inappropriate content and the potential impact on mental health. She emphasized the importance of managing and ensuring the safety of children when using smartphones. Thousands of children received smartphones as Christmas gifts, prompting families to navigate the challenges and benefits associated with this technology.

A campaign called “The Family Chat” in collaboration with Tesco Mobile aims to encourage families to have conversations about online devices, regardless of their children’s ages. The campaign highlights Tesco Mobile’s age-specific toolkits and resources for parents and children to support safe online practices.

Giovanna, along with her husband Tom, who is a children’s author and frontman of McFly, have two other sons aged seven and nine. These children use tablets for messaging family members, playing online games, and video calling. The couple ensured that their eldest son, who received an old smartphone for high school, had restricted settings to limit its functionality and prevent excessive internet usage.

Giovanna stressed the importance of open communication with children about the reasons behind setting restrictions on device usage. She also mentioned the significance of parents being mindful of their own screen time habits to set a positive example for their children.

Providing tips for keeping kids safe online, such as setting up child accounts, using correct age information, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and maintaining ongoing conversations about online safety, the article emphasizes the importance of safeguarding children in the digital age. Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, highlighted the need for prioritizing a safe setup for new devices to protect children from online harm.
