Tennis icon Novak Djokovic has addressed concerns regarding Jannik Sinner’s doping case and subsequent suspension in early 2025. The Italian player accepted a three-month ban after testing positive twice in 2024.
Initially, Sinner was cleared of any wrongdoing as a tribunal attributed the positive tests for clostebol, an anabolic steroid, to contamination during a massage by his fitness coach. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) found no fault on Sinner’s part for the test results in March 2024.
The ITIA defended its handling of Sinner’s case last year, refuting claims of preferential treatment. In February, Sinner reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency, which had challenged the initial decision not to suspend him.
Following his three-month ban from February to May this year, the current world No. 2 strategically timed his suspension to participate in the French Open, starting in late May.
Djokovic, who lost to Sinner in the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, expressed his views on the situation during a comprehensive discussion with Piers Morgan. He emphasized his shock at the incident, stating his belief that Sinner did not intentionally violate the rules but criticized the handling of the case, citing concerns about transparency and the timing of the suspension.
The Serbian player, known for his controversial stance on Covid-19 vaccination, clarified his position on the issue, advocating for freedom of choice rather than taking a specific stance.
In a separate development, Sky has discounted its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, offering savings of £192 and access to over 1,400 live matches, including Premier League and EFL games. Sky plans to broadcast a minimum of 215 live Premier League matches next season, marking a significant increase in coverage.
