Alexis Belliveau, a musician from Moncton, New Brunswick, discovered the absence of an Acadian flag emoji while searching for one to use in a social media post on National Acadian Day. Emojis, which symbolize emotions, ideas, and objects, are widely used in text messages and emails. Recognizing this gap, Belliveau and his friend Julien Robichaud are preparing a proposal to create an Acadian flag emoji through Unicode, a non-profit organization that evaluates and approves emoji proposals.
Expressing the significance of the Acadian flag in digital communication, Belliveau emphasized the importance of having an emoji to symbolize Acadian pride. In an effort to gather support for their initiative, Belliveau and Robichaud have launched an online campaign featuring a petition with over 10,000 signatures, aiming to bolster their proposal to Unicode.
Despite the absence of an official Acadian flag emoji, Acadians have been creatively using sequences of emojis to showcase their pride. To address potential challenges, Belliveau noted a workaround by combining existing emojis of a star and the flag of France for the proposed Acadian flag emoji.
Unicode’s criteria for approving emojis include uniqueness, global usage frequency, potential multiple interpretations, and applicability in sentences. Belliveau is actively spreading awareness among Acadians worldwide and plans to formally submit the proposal in the upcoming winter, reaching out to Acadian communities in regions like Louisiana, France, Quebec, and across Canada.
