London Marathon Considers Two-Day Format for 2027

London Marathon organizers are considering expanding the event to span two days in 2027 to accommodate more runners. Since its inception in 1981, the marathon has been a staple in the capital city.

Traditionally held in a single day, the marathon may transition to a weekend-long affair due to the growing number of participants. Plans are underway to make this shift to provide an opportunity for more individuals to take part in the renowned event.

A spokesperson for the London Marathon stated, “The TCS London Marathon is renowned as the world’s most popular marathon, and we are continuously seeking innovative ways to engage a larger audience, while also benefiting the city of London.”

While discussions are ongoing, no official approval has been granted yet. The primary focus remains on delivering an exceptional 2026 TCS London Marathon on April 26 to ensure a memorable experience for all participants.

Hugh Brasher, the chief executive, emphasized, “The TCS London Marathon is globally recognized as the most popular marathon, and we are committed to exploring new avenues to involve more individuals and bring positive impacts to London.”

With just four weeks left until the 2026 TCS London Marathon, anticipation is high for another successful event that upholds the marathon’s original goal of spreading joy and accomplishment in a challenging world.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London expressed enthusiasm for potentially extending the marathon to a two-day event next year, highlighting London’s status as a hub for sports activities.

This year, an impressive 1,133,813 applicants entered the public ballot for the marathon, marking a substantial 36% increase from the previous year. The event also set a fundraising record, generating £87.3 million, the highest in its history. Furthermore, the 2025 marathon secured a Guinness World Record for the largest number of finishers in a single marathon with 56,640 participants completing the race.
