John Lewis to Boost Employee Pay by Nearly 7%

Around 65,000 employees at the renowned retailer John Lewis are set to receive a substantial pay increase come April. The John Lewis Partnership, which encompasses both department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, has announced a nearly 7% raise in shop floor wages, equating to an additional £1,600 annually for full-time staff. Notably, employees at John Lewis are referred to as partners due to the unique ownership structure of the business.

While the pay raise news is welcomed, there is uncertainty surrounding the traditional partner bonus, which has not been granted since 2022. Jason Tarry, the chair of the partnership, has expressed the commitment to providing a bonus at the earliest opportunity. The decision regarding the bonus will be made by the Board in March separately from the recent pay announcement.

John Lewis stated that 99.6% of its partners will benefit from the pay increase, totaling £108 million in additional compensation. Effective April 1, employees on the shop floor at John Lewis and Waitrose will see a 6.9% wage hike, with minimum hourly rates set to increase to £13.25 nationwide and £14.80 in stores within the M25 area.

For partners who acquire enhanced skills and assume specialized roles, pay rates will rise to £14.31 per hour, reaching £15.98 within the M25. These adjustments partly reflect the rise in the statutory National Living Wage, which will see a 4.1% increase to £12.71 per hour for workers aged 21 and above starting in April.

Helen Webb, the chief people officer at the John Lewis Partnership, emphasized the importance of investing in employees, stating that the £108 million investment aims to provide partners with increased financial stability month after month. This pay raise underscores the organization’s ongoing dedication to partner compensation, aligning with past practices.

In addition to the salary increase, employees at the Partnership enjoy various perks such as discounts at John Lewis and Waitrose, up to a 12% pension contribution, subsidized personal development opportunities, discounted rates at affiliated hotels, and a comprehensive health and wellbeing package that includes access to physiotherapy and counseling services.

The recent financial results for the Partnership revealed a significant loss of £88 million for the six-month period ending in July, mainly attributed to restructuring costs and additional tax and regulatory expenses. Despite these challenges, the group continues to operate 36 department stores and over 300 Waitrose supermarkets, striving to improve its financial performance.
