A construction firm, Caldwell Construction Limited, has gone into administration, endangering over 400 jobs. The company, established in 2007, has enlisted administrators from PKF Littlejohn Advisory. It specializes in groundworks and civil engineering with offices in Stoke-on-Trent and Warrington, Cheshire.
Paul Smith, a Partner at PKF Littlejohn Advisory UK LLP, highlighted the challenging conditions in the construction sector, citing rising costs, project delays, and market uncertainty in recent years. Despite a turnover of £58.4 million last year, Caldwell reported an operating profit of less than £1 million. Smith noted that these challenges intensified in recent weeks, straining the company’s finances and operations.
Efforts to explore solutions and options for the business were made by the PKF Littlejohn Advisory team in Manchester and Leeds in collaboration with Caldwell’s management. However, the company had to opt for administration due to the inability to find a viable way forward outside of insolvency.
Joint Administrator, Oliver Collinge, mentioned that Caldwell’s directors made the tough choice to put the company into administration, with the immediate focus being on supporting employees and stakeholders while evaluating the business’s status and assets.
In a separate incident, Consumer Energy Solutions, an energy provider in south Wales, also entered administration recently, affecting nearly 300 employees. The company, with sites in Swansea and Rhondda Cynon Taf, announced its closure on its website, leading to immediate cessation of operations.
Employees at Consumer Energy Solutions expressed distress after learning about the job risks through a Teams call just before the holiday season. The company stated that it could no longer fulfill any pending work for customers, linking the restructuring and layoffs to the conclusion of the UK Government-backed Energy Company Obligation 4 initiative.
Administrators James Saunders and Michael Lennon from KR8 Advisory Limited were appointed for Consumer Energy Solutions, marking the company’s halt in operations. The administration solely pertains to Consumer Energy Solutions Limited and does not involve other entities in the City Energy Group.
