Renowned television gardener Alan Titchmarsh recently shared the difficulties he encountered in his new garden following a significant change with his wife. Having resided at their £4 million Hampshire estate for 23 years, the couple decided to downsize last year as their children had moved out.
Transitioning to their new garden, Alan faced challenges due to differences in soil composition affecting plant growth. Writing in BBC Gardeners’ World magazine, he emphasized the importance of embracing challenges to enhance gardening satisfaction.
Alan highlighted the shift in soil conditions in his new garden, allowing him to plant acid-loving species directly into the ground, a change from his previous experience with chalky soil. He encouraged readers to experiment with plants that may require slight adjustments in growing conditions for optimal growth.
In an interview, Alan shared the reasons behind selling their property, mentioning their daughters and grandchildren as a driving force in their decision to downsize. Despite the emotional attachment to their former home, the couple listed it for £3.95 million through Savills.
With a desire to be closer to family, Alan and his wife sought a new home that would accommodate their evolving family dynamics. Catch Alan on Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, airing on ITV alongside comedian Chris McCausland and other guests.
