Kemi Badenoch expressed gratitude towards Nigel Farage for handling what she referred to as her “spring cleaning” following the defection of Conservative politician Robert Jenrick to Reform UK.
Badenoch’s acknowledgment came after she became aware of Jenrick’s intention to switch parties, leading her to remove him from the Shadow Cabinet on Thursday amidst a day filled with political upheaval. Subsequently, Nigel Farage welcomed Jenrick as the 24th former Tory MP to join Reform UK, despite previously criticizing him as insincere and lacking firm beliefs.
In various interviews today, Badenoch accused the former Shadow Justice Secretary of being untruthful and emphasized that his statements could not be trusted. When questioned multiple times if Jenrick was considered a “traitor,” Badenoch responded on Sky News by stating that he was now Farage’s responsibility, not hers.
Badenoch expressed satisfaction that Farage was handling the departures from the Conservative Party, indicating that problematic individuals were transitioning to Reform. When challenged about downplaying the impact of the defection, Badenoch remarked that the public was uninterested in the internal conflicts within the Conservative Party.
Additionally, Labour minister Pat McFadden remarked that the right-wing political landscape was experiencing similar disorder and turmoil as during the Conservatives’ tenure in power. McFadden highlighted the need for political stability to focus on enhancing public services without being mired in internal conflicts.
Furthermore, Chancellor Rachel Reeves cautioned against taking Farage’s claim of a Labour defection to Reform lightly, suggesting that his statements should be viewed skeptically. Reeves advised against overreacting to Farage’s assertions, emphasizing the importance of approaching such claims with caution.
