A tragic train accident in Spain has resulted in the loss of 21 lives, with numerous passengers en route to Madrid sustaining injuries as the train veered off the tracks.
Reports indicate that the death toll has climbed to 21, with an additional 25 individuals critically injured following a train derailment in Andalusia on Sunday, January 18.
The incident involved an Iryo train departing from Malaga with around 300 passengers on board, which derailed onto an adjacent track, leading to a collision with another train traveling from Madrid to Huelva. The impact caused both trains to derail, leaving one carriage overturned on the tracks.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene with passengers escaping through shattered windows, while injured individuals sought refuge alongside the tracks. A reporter on the train recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing a carriage completely overturned with broken windows.
Authorities swiftly responded to the crisis, with the Minister of the Interior activating emergency protocols and establishing a command station at Adamuz. The country’s transport minister characterized the situation as “very serious,” mentioning that the last carriages of the Iryo train had crossed onto the opposing track, leading to the catastrophic collision that resulted in multiple casualties.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez assured that the government was collaborating with emergency services to aid the affected passengers. In response to the accident, all high-speed train services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended as emergency teams manage the aftermath.
ADIF announced the suspension of rail traffic in several regions, including Madrid, Cordoba, Seville, Malaga, and Huelva, at least until the following day. The high-speed train operator, Iryo, expressed regret over the incident and activated emergency procedures to address the situation.
As investigations continue and rescue efforts intensify, the community remains in shock over the tragic train collision that has claimed multiple lives and left scores of individuals injured.
