Mobile networks such as BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2 are taking action to prevent foreign call centers from pretending to be banks in a new crackdown on scams.
These networks have committed to enhancing their systems within the next year to stop foreign call centers from falsifying UK numbers, a practice known as number spoofing. This deceptive technique involves scammers using technology to alter their caller ID, making it appear as if they are a trusted entity. The upcoming measures will ensure that calls from overseas are clearly identified.
To combat this issue, artificial intelligence (AI) will be utilized to detect and block suspicious calls and texts. Additionally, advanced call tracing technology will be provided to law enforcement agencies to assist in locating scammers nationwide.
Several companies, including BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK), have joined forces to implement these initiatives.
Recent data indicates that 96% of mobile users base their decision to answer a call on the displayed number, with three-quarters unlikely to pick up calls from unknown international numbers.
Lord Hanson, the Minister for Fraud, emphasized the government’s commitment to combating fraudulent activities, stating that spoofed calls enable scammers to deceive individuals with false identities and promises. The government aims to eliminate call spoofing within a year, making it more challenging for scammers to operate in the UK.
Individuals are encouraged to report scams and fraud to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting the Action Fraud website. In Scotland, scams can be reported to Advice Direct Scotland at 0808 164 6000 or through their website. Suspicious emails should be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk, while suspicious text messages can be forwarded to 7726. Dodgy websites can be reported to the National Cyber Security Centre.
If you suspect a scam call, it is advised to hang up immediately and verify the caller’s contact details online. Never call back the provided number. In case of suspected fraud, contact your bank promptly or call the 159 hotline to connect with your bank. It is crucial to change any leaked or compromised passwords without delay.
