The United Kingdom has recently acquired a new weapon system capable of firing eight rounds per minute while traveling at speeds of up to 100km/h.
Known as the RCH 155, this innovative weapon is mounted on a BOXER armored vehicle, enabling it to engage targets up to 70km away. Through a £52 million agreement with Germany, the UK has enhanced its military capabilities with the RCH 155, drawing insights from the conflict in Ukraine.
This cutting-edge technology boasts a remarkable range of 700km without the need for refueling, equivalent to the distance between Cornwall and Newcastle. Unlike conventional artillery that requires stationary positioning before firing, the RCH 155 can engage targets on the move, enhancing speed and agility while making it challenging for adversaries to retaliate. Operated by just two crew members due to advanced automation, the weapon can effectively target in any direction without repositioning.
Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, emphasized the significance of this new artillery system for the British Army. He highlighted the lessons learned from Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of rapid firing capabilities and mobility in combat situations.
Currently, soldiers operate 14 Archer artillery systems as an interim replacement for the AS90 guns provided to Ukraine. The collaborative agreement between the UK and Germany includes data and facility sharing to ensure both countries benefit from state-of-the-art equipment.
Edward Cutts, the Senior Responsible Owner of Mobile Fires in the Army, praised the joint demonstrator program, emphasizing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness achieved through collaboration with Germany. The RCH 155 signifies a significant advancement in mobile artillery, combining firepower with swift repositioning capabilities to enhance battlefield effectiveness.
In recent developments, Defence Secretary John Healey issued a warning to Vladimir Putin, reiterating the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and investing in mobilizing troops promptly. This commitment comes amidst escalating threats to the UK, leading to the launch of a new military intelligence service to address cyber-attacks, disinformation, and global security concerns.
