Metal Bars Save Man in Moose Collision; Caution Urged

Robert Belley credits a set of metal bars on his vehicle with saving his life following a collision with a moose near Lanigan in 2024. Recalling the incident, Belley describes the moment when the moose was still alive after impact, before the pain set in. As a result of the accident, Belley now struggles with limited use of his left hand, preventing him from working in construction and causing financial strain.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) is cautioning the public about the increased risk of wildlife collisions during this time of year, particularly with more moose and deer crossing roads. On average, the province sees around 8,800 wildlife-related collisions annually, resulting in an average of 400 injuries and two fatalities over five years.

Belley emphasizes the seriousness of wildlife collisions, urging drivers to exercise caution and reduce speed on highways to avoid accidents. Troy Corbett, SGI’s director of traffic safety community engagement, notes that fall is a peak period for wildlife collisions, especially involving deer, as animals may be more active and unfamiliar with their routes.

SGI advises drivers to be vigilant for wildlife, slow down when necessary, watch for animal signs near roads, and use high beams appropriately. In unavoidable collision situations, remaining calm, slowing down, and steering away from the animal are recommended strategies.

Bonnie Dell, executive director of the Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan, stresses the importance of valuing each individual animal involved in collisions. Dell recounts a rescue mission for an injured coyote hit by a vehicle, emphasizing the emotional impact on both animals and drivers. She encourages individuals to contact their organization for guidance in such situations.

Bernie Borgmann, owner of Hooker’s Towing and Recovery, highlights the prevalence of wildlife-related incidents in his line of work, estimating that 10 to 20 percent of the cases he handles involve collisions with animals. Reflecting on the impact of these events, Borgmann describes the force of such collisions and the range of scenarios he encounters, underscoring the dangers wildlife poses on roads.

As wildlife collisions continue to pose risks, drivers are urged to be cautious, especially during peak wildlife activity times, and to seek assistance from relevant organizations when in doubt about handling such incidents.
