“Wrong-way Driver Granted Day Parole Despite Family Objections”

A 35-year-old woman, Brittany Barry, who caused a fatal collision by driving in the wrong direction on a divided highway, resulting in the deaths of Laura Hannah, 53, and Jamie Hannah, 20, has been granted pre-approval for day parole. Barry, who admitted to driving under the influence and causing the tragic accident that also injured her own children, is currently serving a six-year prison sentence following the incident on October 19, 2024, near Dundurn, about 35 kilometers southeast of Saskatoon.

After serving about a year and a half of her sentence that began on March 14, 2025, Barry became eligible for parole consideration. The Parole Board of Canada recently sanctioned her application for release to a community-based residential facility, commonly known as a halfway house, once she qualifies for day parole. Despite objections from the victims’ family members who believe it is premature for Barry to reintegrate into the community, the board acknowledged her remorse, commitment to personal growth, and pledge to maintain sobriety and avoid criminal behavior.

The parole conditions for Barry, who has maintained good behavior in minimum security, include strict rules such as abstaining from alcohol, avoiding bars, refraining from driving, attending prescribed treatment and counseling, and adhering to a seven-year driving prohibition. While Barry will have limited contact with the victims’ family, she will be allowed interactions with her own children and temporary absences for family visits, church attendance, and participation in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings to support her rehabilitation.
