Petition to Expel U.S. Ambassador Hoekstra Gains Momentum

An individual leading a petition demanding the expulsion of Pete Hoekstra, the representative of U.S. President Donald Trump in Ottawa, expressed surprise at the overwhelming support the petition has garnered. The online petition, scheduled for presentation in the House of Commons, urges the Canadian government to label Hoekstra as persona non grata and seek his removal as the U.S. ambassador to Canada. Over 100,000 individuals had signed the petition by Thursday afternoon.

The initiator of the petition, Lee Walker, based in Calgary, highlighted that the significant response indicated a widespread discomfort among Canadians regarding Hoekstra’s alignment with Trump’s viewpoints on Canadian sovereignty and related issues.

The petition accuses Hoekstra of undermining the Canada-U.S. diplomatic relationship by intervening in Canadian politics inappropriately and promoting discussions about Canada’s annexation by the United States. Walker emphasized that such behavior from an ambassador could have serious consequences.

Moreover, Hoekstra has criticized Canadian leaders for their responses to the ongoing trade disputes between the two nations, labeling them as inappropriate and potentially harmful to bilateral relations.

‘Existing Tensions’

The petition also demands the Canadian government to investigate U.S. diplomatic interference in Canadian affairs. The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa declined to comment on the petition, acknowledging its awareness of the matter.

Regarding the impact on trade talks, Walker noted the existing tensions between the U.S. and Canada, emphasizing the need to uphold Canadian sovereignty and values. Negotiators from both countries are working towards a trade agreement before potential levies on Canadian goods by Trump.
