Local elections in numerous English councils have been delayed, affecting voters scheduled to participate in May. Steve Reed, the Local Government Secretary, announced that 29 councils will defer their elections until 2027. The voting was initially set for May 7 for the election of councillors in England, coinciding with elections in the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments.
Concerns raised by over 350 authorities prompted the postponement, as they worried about the implications of restructuring local government on election management. The proposed changes aim to replace the current two-tier system in many parts of England, where district and county councils have distinct responsibilities in the same region, with a new structure of single-tier “unitary” authorities.
Critics have accused the Government of disenfranchising millions of voters by rescheduling elections. In response, Mr. Reed defended the decision, asserting that the reorganization would enhance the efficiency of local government in serving the public.
Several councils, including those in Lincoln, Exeter, Norwich, Peterborough, and Preston, will not hold elections on May 7. Additionally, district councils like Cannock Chase, Harlow, Welwyn Hatfield, and West Lancashire will also be affected.
The postponement of polling day extends to county council voters in East Sussex, West Sussex, Norfolk, and Suffolk, with councillors’ terms being prolonged. However, elections in certain areas, such as Essex County Council, Hampshire County Council, and Isle of Wight Council, will proceed after a one-year delay.
Mr. Reed stated that most council elections across England will proceed as planned, except for the 29 councils affected by the postponement. He emphasized that the decision was made after careful consideration and consultation.
Darren Hughes, Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society, expressed concern, highlighting the significance of elections in upholding representative democracy and the mandate essential for local politicians to make decisions for their constituents.
