“UK to Phase Out Copper Phone System for Digital Voice”

In just half a year, a significant upgrade to the UK’s communication network is on the horizon, prompting additional households to prepare for the impending transition. As of January 2027, the longstanding copper phone system in the UK will be phased out permanently, making way for Digital Voice, a novel service that utilizes broadband connections for phone calls instead of traditional copper wiring that has been in use for over a hundred years.

This impending shift is crucial and cannot be overlooked by households. Failure to transition to Digital Voice may result in the loss of existing landline services.

Recently, a campaign named ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ led by Clare Balding, emphasized the importance of checking landlines to ensure readiness for the digital era.

Clare Balding emphasized, “It’s crucial to act promptly when your provider reaches out to ensure uninterrupted landline services. Neglecting to respond could lead to service disruptions for essential communication needs.”

While the nationwide deadline is six months away, the transition is gaining momentum. BT’s Openreach, the operator of the UK’s largest broadband network, has issued “stop sell” notifications at an additional 112 telephone exchanges, impacting broadband providers dependent on the Openreach network such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, Plusnet, and others. These providers can no longer offer or switch customers to older copper-based broadband and phone services in these areas.

Explaining the process, Openreach stated, “Stop Sell is activated when a majority (75%) of premises connected to a specific exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre. Customers seeking to switch, upgrade, or alter their broadband or phone service will need to opt for a new digital service over our advanced Full Fibre network.”

The latest update extends the list of exchanges under the Stop Sell regime to 1,572, encompassing approximately 15.4 million homes and businesses across the UK.

Despite the perceived challenges in transitioning to full fibre and Digital Voice, the benefits are substantial, including enhanced broadband speeds, more reliable connections, and a modern phone service better suited for the digital age.

Individuals uncertain about their home’s status can verify available services using the Openreach postcode checker.

James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, highlighted, “Our Stop Sell initiative plays a critical role in expediting the UK’s progression towards a modern full fibre landscape. As copper’s capabilities for modern communications diminish, the priority is to transition people to newer, future-proof technologies.”

He added, “By phasing out legacy copper-based services in areas with widespread fibre availability, we are facilitating the migration to faster, more reliable digital infrastructure. This strategic approach not only streamlines the maintenance of old and new networks but also supports the industry-wide transition preceding the decommissioning of the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network, now just six months away. Consequently, everyone will require a digital phone line by then.”
