“Councils Introduce Separate Food Waste Collections”

Local councils are enforcing new rules this year that require households to have separate food waste collections. While some councils provide free replacement biodegradable bags for food waste bins, others require residents to provide their own, which can lead to additional costs.

One council, Darlington Council, shared a money-saving tip on Facebook, revealing that residents can use any plastic bag, bin liner, or even newspaper to line their food caddy. This approach is not only cost-effective but also helps reduce other waste. Several councils, including Scottish Borders Council, Devon County Council, City of Lincoln Council, and Sandwell Council, follow similar waste sorting methods, allowing the use of unwanted plastic bags and empty bread bags.

Devon County Council also encourages residents to reuse any bag as a liner for their waste caddy, emphasizing that special compostable bags are not necessary. Recycling food waste and plastic bags can have various benefits, such as being converted into energy and liquid fertilizers.

However, some councils like Durham County Council, Stockport Council, and Rochdale Council have strict guidelines regarding the use of only biodegradable bags due to different processing methods. Redcar and Cleveland Council permits all food waste in their collections, including leftovers and expired food items, but restricts certain materials.

Individual councils may have specific rules, so it is essential for residents to check with their local authority for precise guidelines on waste disposal.
