Fatal Norwich Incident: Woman in 40s Killed, Man Arrested

A woman in her forties has tragically lost her life in a public area, with a man who is believed to have acquaintance with her being apprehended on suspicion of committing the crime.

Local authorities and emergency responders swiftly arrived at the location shortly before 11:45 pm last Saturday in Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich, after receiving reports of a woman being harmed on the street. Sadly, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene at Catherine Gardens. A man in his sixties was taken into custody in the early hours of the following day on Dereham Road, as confirmed by Norfolk Police.

Law enforcement officials have initiated an inquiry, and detectives are actively investigating both sites, which are currently cordoned off. Yarmouth Road is inaccessible from the intersection with Pound Lane to the junction with School Avenue while the investigation progresses.

Detective Superintendent Stacey Murray, who is overseeing the case, commented, “We are at the initial stages of the investigation, striving to piece together the events that led to the woman’s passing. Nonetheless, we believe that this incident involved individuals who were acquainted with each other. We encourage anyone with relevant information about the incident or the events leading up to it to come forward to assist our investigation.”

The police released a comprehensive statement appealing for information from the public. They reported, “A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal incident involving a woman in Thorpe St Andrew. Responding to a distress call at Catherine Gardens just before 11:45 pm on Saturday, January 17, 2026, officers found a woman injured on the street.”

The woman, aged in her forties, was regrettably declared dead at the scene, prompting a murder investigation. Subsequent inquiries led to the arrest of a man in his sixties in Dereham Road in the early hours of Sunday, January 18. He is presently detained at Wymondham Police Investigation Centre.

Authorities will continue their examination at the designated locations where restrictions are in place. Yarmouth Road remains closed from Pound Lane to School Avenue as investigative procedures are conducted.
