Households are being advised to be cautious with their garbage bins as the warmer weather can lead to the emergence of maggots. The increased temperatures accelerate the decomposition of food waste, attracting flies that lay eggs in the bins, potentially causing infestations.
According to Wheeldon Brothers, this issue is more prevalent in the spring and summer months. James Ward mentioned that with the rise in temperatures, flies become more active, turning bins into breeding grounds if not properly managed.
To prevent maggots from infesting bins, it is crucial to ensure that the bin lid is securely closed. Ward emphasized that keeping the lid shut effectively prevents flies from accessing the waste and laying eggs, which is a simple yet effective defense.
One of the primary causes of maggots is loose food waste. Ward advised that food waste should always be bagged or wrapped before being placed in the bin, as this reduces odors and makes it less appealing to flies.
Maintaining a clean bin is essential, as any residue can attract maggots. Regularly cleaning the bin helps eliminate the conditions necessary for maggot development, preventing recurring issues.
Heat plays a significant role in accelerating infestations. Ward highlighted that warm bins break down waste quicker, attracting flies. Placing bins in shaded areas can help slow down this process.
In case maggots appear, a quick solution is to pour boiling water directly onto them, as it can kill them almost instantly. However, caution should be exercised when handling hot water to avoid any accidents.
