Family members of the 12-year-old boy who was attacked by a shark at Shark Beach in Sydney Harbour provided a distressing update on his condition following the incident.
Identified as Nico Antic, the youngster was enjoying the day with friends when the shark encounter occurred as he was leaping off rocks at the beach. The incident, believed to involve a bull shark, marked the beginning of a series of shark attacks in the area, with four more reported since Nico’s hospitalization.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene and commended Nico’s friends for their valor in rescuing him from the water. Nico was swiftly transported to Sydney Children’s Hospital in critical condition due to severe injuries to both legs sustained in the shark attack, leading to immediate lifesaving surgery.
His family conveyed the grim news that Nico remains in a coma post-incident, with his sister Sophie expressing the family’s devastation, highlighting Nico’s athletic nature and his positive impact on those around him.
A GoFundMe campaign was initiated by a family friend to aid the Antic family during this challenging time. The campaign, supported by around 1,700 donors, has raised over AUD$122,000 (£61,000) as of the latest update.
Nico’s incident marked the onset of a series of shark attacks across New South Wales, prompting temporary closures of swimming locations. Recent environmental conditions in the region, such as warm ocean temperatures and murky waters from storms, have heightened the risk of bull shark encounters, according to shark experts.
Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce advised caution in the waters, emphasizing the potential danger near river mouths due to shark activity. He urged the public to consider safer alternatives to beach activities given the current risks posed by the environmental conditions.
For those willing to support the Antic family, the GoFundMe campaign link is provided for donations.
