“New UK Fuel Finder Program Empowers Drivers to Save”

Millions of drivers have the opportunity to save money on fuel purchases following the implementation of a new government initiative. Under this scheme, all 8,350 fuel stations nationwide are now required to promptly notify third-party platforms of any changes in petrol and diesel prices.

The aim is to provide real-time updates on fuel prices, empowering drivers to make informed choices and potentially save significant amounts over time. Previously, only 65% of UK forecourts were covered by a temporary scheme overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority.

The newly launched ‘Fuel Finder’ program enforces strict guidelines on price transparency for all petrol stations. Non-compliant operators risk facing penalties, including fines up to 1% of their global annual revenue. The initiative addresses concerns about motorists being charged excessive prices at the pump.

Edmund King, president of the AA motoring group, highlighted the long-standing issue of drivers being unaware of cheaper fuel options nearby. He emphasized the importance of transparent pricing and the potential for UK fuel prices to align with European practices, enabling consumers to make cost-effective decisions.

Simon Williams, head of policy at RAC, expressed optimism about the initiative fostering competition among retailers and driving down fuel prices nationwide. As more forecourts participate in daily price submissions, drivers will have easy access to information on the most cost-effective fuel stations in their vicinity via mobile apps or navigation systems.

Currently, the average price for unleaded petrol across the country stands at 132.1p per litre, with diesel priced at 141.2p per litre. This initiative is expected to benefit consumers by promoting price transparency and encouraging competitive pricing in the fuel retail sector.
