A toddler in Hull, East Yorkshire, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer after his mother noticed a concerning change in the color of his chest veins while bathing him. Louisa Shilleto, 37, and her husband Lee, 39, acted on their instincts and discovered a lump under the boy’s arm, leading to a rushed hospital visit just before Christmas. Medical tests revealed a large tumor spanning from under Charlie’s chin to his ribs, resulting in a diagnosis of stage four metastatic embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer.
Following the diagnosis, the family began a challenging journey of treatment. Charlie underwent emergency care at Leeds General Infirmary as the disease had already caused significant harm, including a collapsed lung due to pressure from the tumor. Starting immediate chemotherapy, Charlie embarked on a rigorous treatment plan involving intensive sessions and long-term maintenance therapy.
Despite the initial shock, Charlie’s family remains hopeful yet cautious, as this type of cancer poses a high risk of relapse. The ongoing treatment has visibly impacted the young boy, causing weight loss, changes in walking due to nerve issues, and various side effects. To support the family during this challenging period, a fundraising initiative has raised over £17,000, aiding with travel expenses, living costs during hospital stays, and creating special moments with Charlie.
The overwhelming response to the fundraiser has provided much-needed relief to the family, allowing them to focus on Charlie’s care without financial worries. The community’s support has been instrumental in helping the family navigate through this difficult time.
